Overview

Rankings, as they pertain to blogs, allow internet users the ability to classify different blogs by the amount of traffic they have, the number of comments they receive, or the number of links followed from their site, among other systems. They can also allow users to sort through blogs by genre or category, such as business, or style. By allowing users to compare such statistics users can better find blogs that may be of interest to them.

This is where sites such as technorati and The Truth Laid Bear come in. Both are blog ranking sites, however both function slightly differently. The Truth Laid Bear ranks 100 blogs in what they call an “ecosystem” where they rank their 100 top blogs in different categorys ranging from the most popular “Higher beings” to the least popular “insignificant microbes.” The site Technorati takes a very different, and I would say more professional approach. They provide many features, which the Truth Laid Bear does not. Among these, is a blog directory along with their top 100 blogs as well as giving the user the ability to search through a variety of blog categories by topic. They also include a list of the top 5 blogs, which have most increased in popularity as well at the top 5 that have fallen the most in popularity. This range of features makes Technorati an incredibly superior site to the Truth Laid Bear and allows a much easier and in depth user interface to interact with.

Ultimately, blog ranking sites are designed as a forum to allow blog readers to find posts that are interesting to them, as well as a way to see what is popular in the blogosphere at any given time. These rankings are an integral part of both directing blog traffic on the net, and blog directing users to blogs that will be of the highest interest or most useful to them.
